In summer 2016 the German gas producer Linde launched the world’s first car sharing that exclusively uses cars which run on hydrogen. Under the brand name “Bee Zero”, fifty vehicles of the type Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell are available in the Munich area. “Bee Zero links together two up-to-the-minute mobility trends”, said Dr Christan Buch, member of the Executive Board of Linde AG at the presentation of the project. With “car sharing” and “emission-free driving” the technology group wants to pave the way to emission-free mobility.

Competitive prices

The concept has many advantages. Fuel cell cars are very agile and, unlike battery-electric vehicles, capable of a range of over 400 kilometres per tankful, making them suitable not only for short city trips but also for medium-length ones. The fuel cell in the car ignites a mixture of hydrogen and air. The hydrogen molecules divide and generate two things: electricity to power the electric motor, and water that is so pure it could be used for drinking. The prices for hydrogen and rental are comparable to those for petrol and other car sharing services.
