Washington (dpa) - Germany has approved a donation of 50 million euros (57 million dollars) to help with reconstruction in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe a month after Cyclone Idai devastated the region, Development Aid Minister Gerd Mueller said in Washington on Friday.

The money was intended for "providing health care, restoring drinking water supplies and rebuilding effluent disposal," Mueller said on the side-lines of a World Bank meeting.

He also stressed the need for children to return to school.

The cyclone, which cut a swathe through the south-east African region last month, reaching a peak on March 14 with winds of 195 kilometres an hour, left in its wake around 1,000 dead, and hundreds of thousands homeless.

Large parts of Mozambique, where at least 600 died, were inundated. A cholera outbreak ensued, with almost 4,400 infected.

According to UN figures, around 240,00 homes in Mozambique were destroyed or badly damaged.
