Glasgow (dpa) - The UN Climate Change Conference in Scotland has heralded the global farewell to coal burning with a decision that is being celebrated as historic. For the first time in the history of world climate summits, there was a consensus among the approximately 200 states. The "Glasgow Climate Pact", approved on Saturday evening after passionate discussions, also includes a demand to remove "inefficient" subsidies for oil, gas and coal. However, the wording was weakened at the last minute due to pressure from China and India.

German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze nevertheless praised the deal. "The fossil fuel era is coming to an end, the energy transition is becoming the guiding principle worldwide," she said. At the climate conference, Germany pledged ten million euros in additional support for poor states that have suffered damage and losses in the climate crisis. Together with other European states, a total of 35 million US dollars will be mobilised, as the Deutsche Presse-Agentur learned from the German delegation in Glasgow on Saturday.
