BerlinĀ (dpa) - Fashion designers, models and photographers from around the world gathered at an old electrical substation in the German capital on Monday night for the opening of Berlin Fashion Week.

The catwalk at E-Werk, which was also once a techno club, was opened by sportswear company Bogner.

Highlights of the week will include Austrian designer Marina Hoermanseder showing her latest collection in a converted brewery, and an appearance by Sarah Rafferty, the US actress who starred alongside Meghan Markle in the US drama "Suits," for Marc Cain.

There will also be appearances from labels Riani and Kilian Kerner, Austrian designer Lena Hoschek and German Anja Gockel.

Around 70,000 visitors are expected at the event, which runs until Thursday and will feature around 30 fashion shows and presentations, as well as trade fairs.

Many of the events are set to take place in unusual spaces. For example, the Berliner Salon showcase will be held in a church that suffered severe damage during World War II and has undergone a years-long renovation.

Berlin Fashion Week has been held twice a year since 2007.
