Bavaria’s king Maximilian I Joseph decided 200 years ago that brewers could sell their beer to guests at their breweries. It marked the birth of the beer garden, which remains the epitome of Bavarian Gemütlichkeit to this day. On warm evenings people sit together beneath shady chestnut trees, unpack food from their picnic baskets and enjoy a freshly tapped beer. Life is bliss. Cheers!
