The meeting place is on the beach. Once again Germany is being represented with a German House during the Olympic Games, right on the beach in Rio de Janeiro. Barra Blue Beach Point on the edge of Rio’s Barra district is a meeting point for the German Olympic and Paralympic teams as well as for business partners, and representatives from politics and the media. In addition to the ideal location between the sports venues, landmarks and the Olympic Village, the unusual architecture of the “Beach Club” is a special attraction. The building has a thatched roof that extends down to ground level in places. “This location has a special charm that we associate with Rio anyway: light-heartedness, inspiration, openness and a zest for life,” says Michael Vesper, Director General of the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

A pavilion for everyone

For the first time Germany now has the OliAle pavilion on Leblon Beach, and it is open to everyone. It is designed as a meeting point for local inhabitants, tourists and everyone who wants to experience Rio 2016 with a lively German-Brazilian atmosphere. Visitors can watch live transmissions and enjoy a variety of sports activities, cultural events and stands with German food and drinks. The pavilion is designed as an open meeting place that highlights Germany as a dynamic, creative, modern, sustainable and sporting country. Various German institutions based in Rio de Janeiro, such as the Goethe Institut or the GIZ (German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation) are actively involved. Apart from Denmark, Germany is the only country that received permission for a pavilion on the beach during the world’s largest sporting event.
