German pavilion opens at Biennale Arte in Venice
A number of artists will be presenting their works on the subject of thresholds and boundaries - and the crossing thereof.
Venice (dpa) - The German pavilion has opened at the Biennale Arte in Venice, featuring works by the Israeli artist Yael Bartana and Berlin-based theatre director Ersan Mondtag. In a reference to the pavilion’s theme of “Thresholds”, Katja Keul, the minister of state responsible for culture at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, stressed that art and culture can encourage people to overcome thresholds and boundaries in times of war and conflicts around the world. She specifically mentioned the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The 60th International Art Exhibition Biennale Arte will continue until 24 November. In various rooms of the pavilion, Bartana will be presenting a post-apocalyptical science fiction work that features video animations. In his work, Mondtag is addressing migration and collective memory. Curated by Çağla Ilk, Germany’s contribution will also be exhibited on La Certosa island, where the artists Michael Akstaller, Nicole L'Huillier, Robert Lippok and Jan St. Werner will be showing their works.
