Number of organic farms in Germany is growing

Berlin/Wiesbaden (dpa) - The expansion of organic agriculture in Germany is making progress. Around 28,700 agricultural holdings in Germany were managed under organic farming rules in 2023 - 10 percent more than in 2020 (26,100 organic farms). According to the Federal Statistical Office, this means that more than one in ten agricultural holdings (11 percent) was operating in accordance with these principles. Organic farming accounted for 11.2 percent of agricultural land in Germany in 2023, compared to 9.6 percent in 2020. In total, 1.85 million hectares were used for organic farming last year (up 16 percent on 2020). The largest area devoted to organic farming was in Bavaria at 423,000 hectares, followed by Brandenburg at 228,400 hectares and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at 199,700 hectares.
