Berlin (d.de) - Late Saturday night, Iran launched more than 300 combat drones and missiles in an attack on its arch enemy Israel. According to Israeli sources, 99 percent of the missiles were intercepted.

The German government criticised the attack in the strongest possible terms. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock tweeted on X that this could “plunge an entire region into chaos”. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also used X to warn against a conflagration. He wrote on the short messaging service that the attack was “irresponsible and cannot be justified in any way”. On X, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned “Iran’s unjustified attack on Israel in the strongest possible terms”. She called on all actors to refrain “from any further escalation” and to commit themselves to “restoring stability in the region”.

The G7 leaders will liaise closely today to coordinate a joint diplomatic response to the Iranian attack. In addition, the UN Security Council is planning a special session. The meeting in New York could take place as early as today.
