Bremen (dpa/d.de) – The Day of German Unity celebrations in Bremen have got underway with the symbolic launch of a 17 metre replica of an Ariane heavy lift rocket. “It came as a surprise even to me,” said Andreas Bovenschulte, President of the Bundesrat and leader of the Bremen city government. Parts of the Ariane rocket were built in Bremen.

Up to 450,000 people are expected to join the three-day celebrations in Bremen. Germany’s national public holiday is celebrated on 3 October to mark the unification of Germany as a single country. The Unification Treaty between East and West Germany came into force on 3 October 1990, restoring unity after 40 years of division.

This year’s festival is headlined “Many Strengths – One Nation”. Around 800 events are planned up until Sunday. Guests at the official opening ceremony on Saturday included Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President of the Bundestag Julia Klöckner.
