London (dpa) – Harry Kane has received the Ballon d'Or - the most prestigious individual award in world football - in recognition of his outstanding year of football with Bayern Munich and the English national team. The 33-year-old was honoured yesterday evening in his home city of London. Those Kane pipped to the top prize included France’s top World Cup goal scorer Kylian Mbappé and Spanish world champion Lamine Yamal. He also took home the Striker of the Year award.

“I’m extremely proud of what I have achieved this last year - it has been my best season by far,” Kane said in an interview. Last season he scored 61 goals for Bayern Munich and twelve for his national team, which came third in the World Cup in the summer.

Kane is the first Bayern player to win the award since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge did so in 1981 – and the first Bundesliga professional since Matthias Sammer, who won it as a Borussia Dortmund player in 1996.
