In September 2014, five
island nations in the Pacific finalised an agreement to protect mangrove forests in the region. At a meeting
in Apia, Samoa, the environmental ministers of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Samoa and Vanuatu signed the final declaration. Germany has promoted regional cooperation for protecting mangroves through a series of bilateral projects and played a key role in creating the Pacific Mangroves Initiative.

Mangrove forests are of crucial importance for biological diversity on the Pacific islands. Protected areas within mangrove forests are to be created and reforestation is planned.
