Stasi Prison Bautzen

The Stasi prison in Bautzen: this is where East Germany's state security police interred alleged spies, people they considered critical of the regime, and those who helped others to flee the country. It was the only prison that the Stasi controlled directly, and their treatment of prisoners was particularly harsh. The Bautzen memorial now honours the suffering of former inmates like Siggi Grünewald.
