Bundesbank: Good growth opportunities for Germany

Figures suggest that Germany is emerging from its economic slump. Bundesbank President Nagel sees potential for longer-lasting growth.

16.10.2026

Bangkok (dpa) - Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel sees potential for a longer-lasting upward trend in economic growth in Germany and does not rule out further monetary policy action to curb inflation. The Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) would do whatever was necessary to bring inflation back to the two-percent target in the medium term, Nagel said on the sidelines of the Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Bangkok.

The Bundesbank chief stressed that the IMF has upwardly revised its 2026 growth forecast for Germany to 1.3 percent. He said that this year’s initial positive effects could continue into next year and possibly even into 2028.

Further momentum could be created if this were combined with implementation of the German government’s reform package and impetus from artificial intelligence, he added. The figures “certainly have the potential to continue in the right direction”, Nagel said.
