Chancellor visits chip researchers: we can keep up internationally
How are high-tech chips developed? At a Leibniz Institute, the chancellor saw for himself what top-level researchers are doing in the field of microelectronics.
Frankfurt an der Oder (dpa/bb) – According to the country’s federal chancellor, Germany can hold its own internationally when it comes to top-class research in microchip development. “Our research is internationally top-class. We can keep up,” Friedrich Merz said during a visit to the Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics (IHP) in Frankfurt an der Oder.
Scientists showed him how innovative silicon microchips that are used in industry are produced. In a high-frequency laboratory, the functionality of the microchips was being checked.
The German government’s High-Tech Agenda
The chancellor’s visit was prompted by the German government’s High-Tech Agenda. By investing in key technologies, the goal is to boost economic strength, create new jobs and make Germany more independent.
Scientists demonstrated to the chancellor their work on a sensor chip that enables liquids to be rapidly tested in just a few minutes - for use in medicine, for example. Merz himself placed a small chip with a test solution into a device that works with laser and light. One long-term objective is to use this development for the early detection of sepsis.
