Men’s quadruple sculls rowing team takes European gold
Taking gold in the European Rowing Championships, the men’s quadruple sculls team finished off an outstanding day for the German team in grand style. Germany’s diving athletes also won a European Championship medal.
Varese (dpa) - After bagging a gold medal for the first time in 13 years, achieving other podium places and recording a European Championship personal best for Olympic winner Oliver Zeidler, Germany’s rowers have successfully completed the first day of the finals at the European Championships in the Italian town of Varese. 13 years after Germany’s last success in the men’s quadruple sculls, Marc Weber, Felix Heinrich, Jonas Gelsen and Ole Hohensee picked up gold. Previously, the PR2 mixed double sculls featuring Jasmina Bier and Paul Umbach had won the first gold medal for Germany. In addition, the women’s four and the women’s quadruple sculls scooped silver, while the men’s four took bronze. Zeidler set a European Championship record in the men’s single sculls in the semi-final. Achieving a time of 6:37.87 minutes over a distance of 2,000 metres, he beat the best time of defending champion Yauheni Zalaty (6:38.51) set in 2025.
German diving athletes were also successful at the European Aquatic Championships in Paris: Moritz Wesemann defended his title from the 1-metre board. Previously, Pauline Pfeif and Elena Wassen had won silver in the synchronised platform event.
