Open Monument Day: An opportunity to discover hidden treasures
Visitors are flocking to thousands of sites across Germany today for Open Monument Day. The Upper Franconian city of Bamberg is in particular focus this year.
Bamberg (dpa) - Fans of historical monuments have the opportunity once again this weekend to visit buildings all over Germany that in many cases are otherwise closed to the public. There are also numerous other events taking place. For Open Monument Day, more than 6,000 monuments are open across the country. The organisers have described it as “Germany’s biggest cultural event”. Information about the sites that can be visited is available online.
Bamberg is in particular focus this year. A World Heritage Site located in the Upper Franconia region, the city will host the central opening event. According to the German Foundation for Monument Protection, this means that the main Open Monument Day event will be taking place in Bavaria again for the first time in ten years.
Alongside a major programme of on-stage events, visitors can enjoy access to more than 50 monuments in Bamberg. They include the Old Town Hall, one of the city’s most famous buildings, which was built in the middle of the River Regnitz. Less well known sites can also be visited, however, such as a historic workshop that has been manufacturing brushes since 1907.
