Curator and art critic Okwui Enwezor is to be awarded the International Folkwang Prize 2017.

He is one of the most influential persons in the international art world. Curator, critic and scholar Okwui Enwezor has opened up contemporary art in Europe and the USA to influences from Africa. In recognition of his services, he is now being awarded the International Folkwang Prize 2017. Since 2010, Folkwang-Museumsverein has bestowed the International Folkwang Prize, which is worth 25,000 Euros, on persons and institutions for their great services to promoting art and familiarizing the general public with it.

Renowned prize-winner

Born in 1963 in Nigeria, Okwui Enwezor is currently Artistic Director and Managing Director of Munich’s Haus der Kunst. He is widely considered one of the most productive curators and theorists of modern and contemporary art. Enwezor has been in charge of many major international exhibitions such as documenta 11 in Kassel (2002) and the Venice Biennale in 2015.
