Organization of German Art Associations

In the German art scene, art associations play an important role as non-commercial forums for contemporary art which has not yet gotten established. Art associations often give unknown artists their first chance to present their work.

Study Group for Cemeteries and Memorials

Only death reveals what life really is. Under this motto the Museum for Sepulchral Culture looks at death, a topic that evokes emotions, perhaps even worries and anxieties, in many people. The Study Group for Cemeteries and Memorials, which runs the museum, aims to inform the public in the German-speaking countries about appropriate ways of dealing with dying, death and mourning.

Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum for Film and Television

From the first moving pictures to digital film: there are thousands of films dating from as early as 1895 stored in the archives of the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum for Film and Television. The Berlin-based foundation collects, restores and saves flicks from Germany and from around the world. The film building on Potsdamer Platz is also home to costume sketches, scripts, posters and cameras.

German Museum Association

The German Museum Association, which was formed in 1917, is the umbrella and trade association of German museums to which all kinds of museums and museum employees belong. Regardless of whether the question is about collections or research and education – this is where members and the responsible authorities can get competent advice.

German Historical Museum

What is “German”? The collections and changing exhibitions at the German Historical Museum in Berlin (DHM - Deutsches Historisches Museum) document the culture and history of Germany from its beginnings to the present. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the DHM, which was first formed in 1987, took over the building and the contents of the “Museum for German History” in the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany).

The National Museum of German Art and Culture

In 1852, the Franconian baron, Hans Freiherr von und zu Aufseß, founded a “well-organized compendium of all available source material for German history, literature and art” – which later became the National Museum of German Art and Culture. The main focus of the largest museum of cultural history in Germany is on the research and preparation of the collections, which currently comprise more than 1.3 million objects.

House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany

Experience German history: in the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany (Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland), historical developments and democratic traditions are made easier to understand through regularly updated objects. One main theme in the permanent exhibition in Bonn is separation and reunification in East and West German history.

International Museum Day

Every year in May, Germany’s treasure chests open on the International Museum Day. From Aachen to Zwickau, museums place a special focus on our cultural heritage with festivals, competitions, exhibitions and readings. First initiated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), International Museum Day has been an important date on the cultural calendar since 1997.

The MMK museum of modern art in Frankfurt am Main

Masterpieces of world renown can be found in the heart of Frankfurt. Founded in 1991, the “Museum of Modern Art” offers lovers of contemporary art a supreme collection of more than 4,500 works. Today, the MMK ranks among the celebrated museums of modern art.

Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation

The original objective was to preserve and maintain the cultural heritage of the former state of Prussia. Today Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz includes the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Berlin State Museums), the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Privy State Archives), the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library) the Ibero-Amerikanische Institut (Ibero-American Institute) and the Staatliche Institut für Musikforschung (State Institute for Music Research). In other words, the Foundation covers all aspects of cultural heritage.

Technical Museum Speyer
