Daniel Richter is not the sort of person you would immediately recognise on the street. Although he is one of the superstars of German art, his lanky figure and tousled hair lend him a fairly low-key look. That is why hardly anyone recognised him when, two years ago, he set himself up for a day as a portrait artist in front of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His drawings, which he sold to tourists for five euros, are now probably scattered around the globe. Richter’s gallerist would have asked at least 6,500 euros for each of them.

Influential representative of his generation

The shy artist, who was born in 1962 in north Germany, is not someone who is overeager to seek the limelight. On the contrary: in interviews or during artists’ talks in front of a large audience he looks rather nervous and speaks more quickly than usual. But he has become accustomed to the situation. He is direct, gets to the point and seasons his words with wit and irony.

Richter is one of the influential artists of his generation. His paintings are brightly coloured large-format works that can rarely be grasped at a single glance. Nor is that his intention. He is above all interested in constantly exploring and questioning the possibilities of painting. “I don’t believe in technique. For me painting is a form of thinking, and I keep control over the things required for this form of thinking,” says Richter as he describes his art. There is no trace of routine to his work. It is characterised instead by change and the steady development of a new pictorial language. Up until the year 2000 his works were purely abstract, and it was only later that he included figurative and sometimes autobiographical elements. His pictures fetch up to six-figure sums at auctions.

Berlin, Paris, Zürich, Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver: Daniel Richter travels the world with his works. Some of his latest works are now on show at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. “Hello, I love you” presents a concentrated selection of this versatile artist’s paintings.
