Jella Haase is the “Shooting Star” of 2016
23-year-old actress Jella Haase is to be named Europe’s “Shooting Star” of the year at the Berlin Film Festival.
She played Chantal, the chavvy girl with the garish make-up, in the “Fack ju Göhte” (Suck Me Shakespeere) films – and is considered to be one of German cinema’s most talented young actresses. Although Jella Haase from Berlin’s Kreuzberg district is only 23, the list of her awards just keeps getting longer: in 2011 she won the Bavarian Film Award for best young actress for her portrayal of a young Neo-Nazi sympathizer in David Wnendt’s “Kriegerin” (Combat Girls) and for her role in the film “Lollipop Monster”. She received the Günter Strack Television Award for best actress for her interpretation of a blackmailing underage prostitute in a Bremen-based episode of the TV crime drama Tatort entitled “Puppenspieler”. At the Berlinale, Jella Haase is now to be awarded the accolade “Shooting Star 2016”. In all, ten young actors from all over Europe were selected, the Berlinale being keen to draw attention to their talent.
Cocky, rebellious, trashy and a heart of gold
The Shooting Star jury’s verdict on Jella Haase reads as follows: “When it comes to playing cocky, rebellious and somewhat trashy characters with a heart of gold, Jella can do no wrong in the eyes of German audiences – as we saw once again in “Vier Könige” (4 Kings). We look forward to seeing how she applies this energy to new, unexpected roles.”
The “Shooting Star” award has been presented at the Berlinale since 1998 by the European Film Promotion network. The idea is to promote young and talented film actors from Europe and European cinema in general. Since 2008, an international jury comprising representatives of the film industry has selected up to ten “Shooting Stars” from the group of nominees. German “Shooting Stars” of recent years have included Alexander Fehling (2011), Anna Maria Mühe (2012) and Jannis Niewöhner (2015). Previous international award-winners include many well-known actors such as James Bond star Daniel Craig (“Shooting Star” of 2000), Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (1998), Daniel Brühl (2003), Benno Fürmann (2001) and Nina Hoss (2000).
