Grants for humanities scholars
The Gerda Henkel Foundation is sponsoring PhD students in Africa with its Lisa Maskell Scholarship Programme.

She knows more about the literary portrayal of Maasai women in nomadic societies than almost anybody else. Neema Eliphas Laizer from Tanzania is studying for a doctorate on this very topic at Stellenbosch University in South Africa – and has received a three-year scholarship. The Gerda Henkel Foundation is providing 2.5 million euros to sponsor PhD students from Africa and Southeast Asia through its recently established Lisa Maskell Scholarship Programme. The Foundation’s partner in Africa is the University of Stellenbosch’s Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences. A total of 25 PhD students from Africa are receiving scholarships over a period of five years.
