Currently some 3,800 successful and hopeful up-and-coming and top athletes from over 50 different disciplines enjoy the support of Deutsche Sporthilfe, a private funding initiative. Ninety percent of all German Federal medals at the World and European championships were won by sportsmen and women who had received such support, and that includes 230 medals at the Olympic Games and 320 at the Paralympics.

Up to 12.5 million euros a year are spent on funding athletes. This sum primarily comes from important business partners, donations, events, “GlücksSpirale” lottery profits and sport stamps. National patrons of the initiative are Deutsche Lufthansa, Mercedes-Benz, Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post.

In almost five decades of being active in top-class sport, Deutsche Sporthilfe has developed effective concepts for supporting its athletes. This support offers sportsmen and women the best chances of succeeding and holding their own in modern competitive sports and also of combining top-class sports with a good education – a key task for values-oriented sports promotion that accompanies athletes over many years as well as beyond their active career and does not view them according to standards applied by the media and marketers.
