What do smugglers and traffickers typically promise?

Many scams start out with attractive sounding promises such as “safe passage”, “guaranteed asylum” or “visa/resettlement for cash”. These are precisely the kind of promises that should sound the alarm bells: asylum applications are checked for legal compliance by the authorities in the destination country, while resettlement and visa applications undergo official processes - nobody can genuinely “sell” an asylum, resettlement or visa approval.

What are typical fraud schemes involving fake documents for migration to Germany?

In many cases, alleged “listed places”, “special quotas” or “embassy appointments” are offered - backed up by screenshots, voice messages or fake letters. Typically, an initial fee is then followed up by a series of additional charges: first, a deposit is required; then new fees keep being charged for “documents”, “safety”, a “new route” or alleged “bribery”.

How do I protect myself from visa scams and fake embassy appointment offers?

One thing that should make you suspicious is if there is pressure on you to act very quickly and not involve anyone else. If you are asked to make payments in secret, hand over your passport or mobile phone, keep any communication secret or if no verifiable information is provided, there is a high risk that the offer in question is fake.

What are the most important legal pathways for migration to Germany?

The best way to protect yourself against people smugglers and scams is to obtain verifiable information and consult official organisations such as the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the Federal Ministry of the Interior or the portal Make it in Germany. The earlier you verify information and take advantage of independent advice, the more likely it is that you will avoid taking risky decisions that allow others to make money out of you.
