Project description:

As an archipelago region, the access of education in Pangkep is limited, especially in the islands. The kids who have graduated from elementary school unlikely go on to middle and high school because no middle and high school is available in their islands. As a consequence, many kids have to work and help their family to make a living instead of going to school.

However, many of them are still keen to study but it’s too costly for their family to send them to the main land to get into middle and high school. Therefore, many talented youth in the islands are left behind in many aspects. Meanwhile, there are many skills and interests in the island which they can explore through education.

We believe that the education we offer will stimulate the creativity and improve the quality of life and employment prospects of these island youths.

Therefore, we have been implementing a project called The Floating School that’s now ongoing in three islands in Pangkep, Indonesia, and has reached 90 young people. It is a semi-traditional boat which transports books, stationaries, education materials, and also mentors who will give weekly workshops to the youth in the islands. There are seven different themes in which the youth can choose to study. They are drawing, crafting, literary, basic computer, dance, music and photography.

This project connects the youth from different islands through our program and our boat which will reach them frequently. As the first floating school in Indonesia, this program is expected to be benchmarked by other community in other regions, both in Indonesia or in other ASEAN countries.

First, Through our project, the youth will learn skills of interest to them. We provide them with education facilities and mentors who will help them to improve their skill. We expect that the youth who join our program will have a skill that they can utilize to have a better life and job. We will give a better understanding about the importance of education to the local people, especially parents and the young people.
