Project description:

In order to enhance knowledge and skills of young Afghan girls before and after Kankor exam this concept suggests certain long term, result oriented and institutionalized approach

Goal and purpose of the project:

Education is key driver for long-term development in each society, but the picture in Afghanistan is dismal. Especially of women who comprise half of Afghanistan’s population, they are often deprived of education. One of the reasons for girls remaining deprived of higher education is their failed results in Kankor exam. Lack of quality education, trained teachers, poor infrastructural facilities in schools are the main factors for the failure of these students in Kannkor exams. According to UN Women, every year more than 100,000 secondary school graduates who respectively attend Kankor, but due to their poor secondary education as mentioned above, limited spaces in public higher education system, a small percentage of these students find a spot at the government universities (2015). The rest remain out with disappointments and social and psychological problems.
The failure of such a big number of girls is horrific since most Afghan families do not have the needed economic resources to support their girls to attend private universities. This scenario is far dangerous for girls because for most girls especially in rural Afghanistan whose families are struggling with economic problems and disappointments, the first try is the first and last one. Thus they easily withdraw from higher studies and submit to early marriages, manual work, and strengthen the socially constructed believe that girls are less valuable to get higher education.
To overcome these obstacles in the way of women’s higher education and career development I propose a long-term/sustainable, result oriented institutionalized focus. To do so, I suggest establishment of a non-governmental and not-for-profit Vocational Capacity Building Institute for Afghan Women. This institute will concentrate on developing post and pre Kankor exam knowledge and skills of the young girls.
