Alabali Radovan calls for support for states facing high debt levels

Development partnerships with countries in the Global South are an investment in the future, said Germany’s Development Minister at a meeting of the IWF and World Bank in Bangkok.

Bangkok (dpa) – Germany’s Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan has called for greater support for poorer states to help them deal with financial burdens. “Almost half of people live in countries which are paying more to service debt than on health and education,” Radovan said on the fringe of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok. Development partnerships were not universal handouts, she said but represented good investments in the future.

Federal Government establishes North-South Commission on development policy

The North-South Commission on Development policy, an initiative of the German Government, also met in the Thai capital. The commission was established in late June 2026 by the Federal Cabinet as an independent body comprising 20 members tasked with developing new recommendations for new development cooperation, such as new partnership models.
