Alexander Zverev wins US Open for first time
German tennis star crowns his most successful Grand Slam season to date with second Grand Slam title in just three months.
New York (dpa) - Alexander Zverev has won the US Open for the first time. In the final in New York, the 29-year-old German tennis star beat Ben Shelton from the US 6:3, 7:6 (7:2), 5:7 and 6:2. Following his victory at the French Open in June, this is already Zverev’s second Grand Slam title in just three months.
He is only the second German - after Boris Becker - to win the US Open men’s singles. Zverev explains that he was able to enjoy his second Grand Slam triumph more than his first: “In Paris I was full of stress, now I’m full of happiness. I’m simply over the moon.”
The world’s number two looks back at his most successful Grand Slam season so far. Alongside his wins in Paris and New York, he reached the Wimbledon final and the semi-final at the Australian Open. Now Zverev has his sights set on the world number one ranking.
He had already reached the final of the US Open in 2020. But he then squandered a two-set lead against Austria’s Dominic Thiem, missing out on his first Grand Slam title.
