Berlin/Kyiv (dpa) - Germany’s Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz is appalled by the massive Russian attacks on Ukrainian capital Kyiv. “The German government strongly condemns this reckless escalation. Germany remains firmly at Ukraine’s side,” Merz wrote on X, referring to the use of the new and highly destructive Oreshnik intermediate-range missile. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed similar views: “Russia’s missile terror is shocking. The use of an Oreshnik is a further escalation.”

The Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital also caused serious damage to studios of ARD correspondents and Deutsche Welle (DW). Nobody was apparently in the studios at the time of the attacks.

“To see your own workplace completely devastated is a shock,” said Vassili Golod, head of ARD’s Kyiv studio. He said his team would not allow itself to be intimated, however. “Despite the difficult night, our colleagues in Kyiv showed up for their regular shifts in the newsroom this morning,” said Mykola Berdnyk, head of the DW office in Kyiv.
