Germany and France strengthen technology alliance

In addition to their planned nuclear cooperation, Germany and France intend to work closely together on AI, space and quantum technology.

Brühl (dpa) - Germany and France intend to deepen their cooperation on key technologies such as artificial intelligence, space, nuclear fusion and quantum technology and increase Europe’s technological sovereignty. This was agreed by the two countries during a Franco-German Ministerial Council at Augustusburg Palace in Brühl.

Beforehand, the first concrete steps towards implementing the recently agreed cooperation on nuclear deterrence had been taken. Flanked by Rafale and Eurofighter jets in a maintenance hangar at Nörvenich Air Base near Cologne, German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron chaired a meeting of the Franco-German Defence and Security Council to arrange Germany’s first involvement in a French nuclear exercise.

In the context of outer space, the two countries stressed the importance of Europe’s planned Iris2 satellite system - with roughly 300 of its own satellites, it aims to reduce dependence on other suppliers. On the topic of nuclear fusion, the conclusion reads: “We recognise the crucial role of fusion energy as a safe, sustainable and carbon-neutral solution to meet the future energy needs of Europe and the world.”
