Merz calls for ceasefire and more humanitarian aid for Gaza

Merz speaks out clearly on Gaza war: humanitarian assistance must reach the people, hostages must be released and a post-war order must take both sides into account.

Berlin (d.de) – Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has criticised Israel’s actions in Gaza and called for a ceasefire and comprehensive humanitarian assistance for the suffering population. “What’s happening in the Gaza Strip is no longer acceptable. We are pressing for a ceasefire and comprehensive humanitarian assistance for the people in the region,” Merz said at his summer press conference. Merz also stressed that the urgently needed aid had to reach the people in Gaza “in a secure and humane manner”.

Furthermore, Merz voiced support for a viable post-war order for the Gaza Strip that would take into account both Israel’s security interests and the Palestinians’ right to self-determination. He said that this required the disarmament of the radical Islamist Hamas group. Merz also called once again for the remaining hostages, including German citizens, to be released.
