Merz: “We’re taking steps to ensure our security”
In his first New Year address, Federal Chancellor Merz calls for confidence and determination in times of crisis, saying that 2026 could mark “a new beginning”.
Despite a tense global situation, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for optimism, saying he wanted the new year to deliver decisions on key reforms. According to an advance version of his first New Year address as head of government, Merz said 2026 could mark “a new beginning”. “For this to happen we must have confidence in ourselves – in our courage and our determination,” said the Federal Chancellor, adding: “Let’s not listen to the alarmists and the doomsayers.”
Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and the threat from Russia, the Chancellor acknowledged that in an increasingly uncertain world, a lot of people were worried about peace. “I say to you: we’re taking steps to ensure our security. We live in a safe country.” In order to ensure that this remained the case, deterrence capabilities had to be strengthened, said Merz in his address, which is to be broadcast on New Year’s Eve.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Chancellor said: “This year has the potential to be one in which Germany – and Europe – regain new strength so as to build on decades of peace, freedom and prosperity.”
