Message from the future Federal Chancellor Merz
Political messages and traditions at Easter in Germany.

Berlin (dpa) – The likely future Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz outlined the new government’s plans in an Easter video message. “Our mission is clear: Germany must once again become stronger, safer, fairer and more modern,” said Merz. He recalled the Christian Easter message, which he said was especially relevant this year: “After dark days comes light.” The challenges were immense, he added – economic, social and geopolitical. “Even so, there is reason for hope. It’s up to us to shape the future.” Merz said that Germany was looking to take on responsibility in Europe and the world – not noisily, but reliably; and not arrogantly, but in a spirit of partnership.
Over Easter, thousands of peace activists are taking part in the traditional Easter marches in several cities, calling for peace. Key issues include disarmament, a world free of nuclear weapons and an end to wars such as those in Ukraine and Israel.
Many people in Germany celebrate Easter in the traditional way – homes and gardens are decorated with brightly painted eggs, and children hunt for hidden chocolate eggs. In some places, huge Easter bonfires are lit. Church services are also important at Easter, with many Christians celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.
