Berlin (dpa) – The organisers of the Carnival of Cultures festival reported that more than 1.1 million people attended the event that was held in Berlin over the Pentecost weekend. Around 770,000 people attended the parade and around 390,000 people visited the street festival, according to the organisers. The summer-like weather had created a fascinating atmosphere, they said.

The Carnival of Cultures festival that took place in the Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg neighbourhoods was established some 30 years ago. In a statement issued on Monday, the organisers described the festival with its parade on Pentecost Sunday as one of Germany’s biggest street festivals and postmigrant traditions. More than 60 groups contributed to the parade through the Friedrichshain neighbourhood with dancing, music and costumes from around the world.
