Pistorius: closer coordination with like-minded partners
Boris Pistorius begins trip to partners in Asia. Focus: closer cooperation on security, defence and the protection of sea lanes.
Tokyo (dpa) – German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is expanding military and defence cooperation with strategic partners in Asia. Pistorius began a visit to Japan, with further stops planned in Singapore and Australia over the coming days. “The erosion of the international order means we must coordinate even more closely with like-minded countries,” Pistorius said at the start of the trip in Tokyo.
The visit will focus on issues relating to the rules-based international order, securing sea lanes, upholding international law, and the region’s importance in terms of global value creation and supply chains. Pistorius also plans to discuss the regional security situation, the expansion of strategic dialogue, and cooperation with the armed forces and defence industries in partner countries. In recent years, the Bundeswehr has stepped up its participation in exercises in the Indo-Pacific region. The Federal Government believes that security in Europe and security in the Indo-Pacific are inextricably linked.
