Scholz and Macron meet for talks following transition of power in US

Chancellor: the US is Germany’s closest ally.

Paris (dpa) - Two days after the inauguration of the new US President Donald Trump, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz is meeting with President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Wednesday. The French head of state will receive the chancellor at the Élysée Palace at around lunchtime. Besides discussing the EU’s future position vis-à-vis the US, they are also likely to talk about the Ukraine war and the Middle East conflict. Beforehand, Scholz had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Davos. Bundesrat President Anke Rehlinger will also be in Paris from Tuesday to Thursday and will meet the president of the National Assembly and the president of the Senate, among other people. On Thursday, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius will be meeting with his French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu.
