Three more medals for Germany
Historic successes for Team Germany: Owen Ansah wins in the 200 metres, while Emil Agyekum and Shanice Craft each take silver.
Berlin (dpa) – German athletes have won three more medals at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Owen Ansah took gold in the 200 metres, Emil Agyekum won silver in the 400-metre hurdles and Shanice Craft scooped silver in the discus throw. As a result, Team Germany has now won twelve medals in all.
Ansah ran the 200 metres in 19.95 seconds, becoming the first German to finish under the 20-second mark. Excessive tailwind means that his time will not count as a German record, however. The 25-year-old is the first German to win European Championship gold in this event for 44 years. The last time a German took this title was in 1982, when Olaf Prenzler picked up gold for East Germany (GDR). Ansah had already taken bronze in the 100 metres in Birmingham.
Agyekum also won a historic victory. The 27-year-old ran the 400-metres hurdles in 47.87 seconds, finishing second behind Norway’s Karsten Warholm. This is the first time Germany has won a European Championship medal in this discipline for 40 years.
Craft threw the discus 65.72 metres, likewise taking silver. After winning European Championship bronze in 2014, 2016 and 2018, this is her fourth European Championship medal but first silver.
Ansah’s win remains subject to an ongoing legal process. The National Anti-Doping Agency of Germany has accused him of refusing to provide a doping sample and has recommended a four-year suspension. Ansah rejects the accusation and is not currently suspended.
