Washington (dpa) - US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin plans to meet with colleagues from several countries to discuss the war in Ukraine at the US Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate next week. The meeting is to take place next Tuesday, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby announced on Thursday. Kirby did not give any details concerning the list of participants, though he did say that not only Nato countries would be invited.

Kirby explained that one goal of the meeting was to ensure the lasting security and sovereignty of Ukraine, and that the talks should therefore be about Ukraine’s defence needs beyond the current war. “We believe it is time to have that discussion as well”, Kirby said, adding that further military support for Ukraine would also be a topic. The US government had announced new military aid worth 800 million US dollars.
