Kyiv (AA/d.de) - To mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has travelled to the country. Military support in view of Russia’s ongoing attacks on civilian infrastructure will be high on the agenda, as will winter preparedness and increased German-Ukrainian cooperation on security.

“The holiday period in July and August, which is the best time of the year for people all over Europe, has been the deadliest for Ukraine’s civilian population in more than four years,” said Wadephul.

As well as applying military pressure, Russia is also attacking civilian infrastructure - targeting in particular the country’ energy supply. Germany is supporting Ukraine in maintaining its energy supply, repairing damage and making its critical infrastructure more resilient. One focus of Wadephul’s visit will be preparing Ukraine for the coming winter. This includes providing generators, spare parts and other energy equipment, supporting the Ukrainian energy sector and measures to protect critical infrastructure. Germany also sees Ukraine as an important security partner and believes it can learn lessons from the country’s experiences of hybrid threats and modern warfare.
