Glienicke Bridge – Berlin/Potsdam

Twenty-five years after the fall of the Wall, Potsdam and Berlin are once again separated by barriers and barbed wire. Don't panic, history has not been turned back. During the Cold War Glienicke Bridge was the infamous venue for exchanges of secret agents. Now it is the macabre backdrop for a spy thriller with the working title “St. James Place”. At the end of 2014 legendary director Steven Spielberg shot part of the film there with Oscar prize winner Tom Hanks – and Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel even visited the set.

“Görliwood”

Deep in the east of Germany lies “Görliwood”. That is the brand name used by Görlitz, the town on the river Neisse where Hollywood studios like to film. The unique old town with buildings in architectural styles ranging from Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque and art nouveau is ideally suited as a double for metropolises of all historical eras. The small Saxon town will make an appearance at the 2015 Oscars award ceremony in Los Angeles. “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, the Wes Anderson film that was mainly shot in Görlitz and at Babelsberg Studio, has been nominated for Oscars in a total of nine categories.

Main role for Hamburg

If you visit the locations in Hamburg that appeared in the anti-terror thriller “A Most Wanted Man”, which was based on the novel by John le Carré, you will gain a very good impression of the Hanseatic city's special places – from the landing stages at the port to the warehouse district, the Reeperbahn and the Atlantic, the prestigious luxury hotel on the river Alster. “A Most Wanted Man” by director Anton Corbijn is the last film with actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in 2014. He plays alongside German actors like Nina Hoss, Daniel Brühl and singer Herbert Grönemeyer, who makes a rare cameo appearance.
