Start with a trip to ancient Egypt to greet Nefertiti, then let your gaze wander with the “Monk by the Sea”, and finish by moving your hips with the “Dancer”. No problem, it’s all possible on Museum Island in Berlin. Here, you’ll find artistic and cultural treasures spanning 6,000 years of human history. Five museums attract millions of visitors every year: the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum. The latter is currently closed for renovation – the first section is expected to reopen in 2027.

Together, these museums form the largest museum complex in the world. Since 2009, they have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museums are located close together on the Spree Island in Berlin. The Museum Island ticket allows visitors to explore all five museums in one day.

200 Years of Museum Island

It was two hundred years ago, on 9 July 1825, that the story of Museum Island began: commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, construction of the Royal Museum – today’s Altes Museum – began on that date. The museum opened in 1830, and the other museums followed, with the ensemble completed in 1930.

Now a big birthday celebration is on the horizon – with special exhibitions, open-air events, concerts and many other activities. The 200-year anniversary of Museum Island will be celebrated over the next five years – plenty of time to join in the party with Nefertiti and co.
