Jannis Niewöhner was just ten years old when he first appeared before the camera in the German TV crime series Tatort (Crime Scene). He was so impressive that further offers followed. Since then the actor, who was born in Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia, has performed a remarkable number of successful leading roles in television and cinema productions. His breakthrough came when he was 21 with his role as Gideon de Villiers in Ruby Red and Sapphire Blue, the popular film versions of the bestselling fantasy novels by German author Kerstin Gier. This established Jannis Niewöhner as one of Germany’s well-known film stars, who now has a large fan following especially among young cinema-goers. In 2014 he played the leading role in Four Kings directed by Theresa von Eltz and is making his international debut in the upcoming feature film The Girl King by Mika Kaurismäki.

Alongside Daniel Brühl

An international jury in Hamburg has now chosen him as one of ten up-and-coming young European talents who will be honoured at this year’s Berlinale. In its statement the jury said: “It rarely occurs that an actor is able to move so seamlessly from the real to the fantastic, but Jannis has displayed remarkable breadth.” Mr Niewöhner said in interviews that he was very pleased with the award: “It makes me feel proud to stand alongside a number of great colleagues who were also once chosen as Shooting Stars for our country, and whose acting has shaped me as well, people such as Hannah Herzsprung, David Kross or Daniel Brühl.”
