“Anyone currently trying to shift into reverse gear and roll things back will only damage themselves in terms of the international competition,” were the words with which Federal Minister of the Environment Barbara Hendricks responded to the announcement by US President Donald Trump that he intended to roll back key elements of the climate policy put in place by his predecessor Barack Obama. One such component is the “Clean Power Plan” written in 2015. Initiated by Obama the concept has not yet gone into force but for the first time sets mandatory targets in the United States for reducing greenhouse gases in the energy sector. In an interview, German Federal Minister of the Environment Hendricks was sceptical whether Trump’s about-turn would actually be able to stop climate protection. “The USA are important,” she said, “but there is no longer any stopping this worldwide development.”
