The number of people learning German worldwide continues to grow. In 2015, it has reached a total of 15.4 million. This is the key finding of a study by the Federal Foreign Office, the Goethe-Institut, the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad and the German Academic Exchange Service. Since the last study, conducted in 2010, demand has risen in 60% of the countries polled. It is above all in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East that more people now want to learn German. However, the lion’s share of those learning German is still inside Europe, namely 9.4 million. A key role in teaching German falls to the Initiative “Schools – Partners for the Future” (PASCH): over 600,000 students are learning German at the roughly 1,800 schools participating in the scheme.
