The Wagner brothers – two Berliners in NBA’s parallel universe

Sometimes an international career can begin on a small basketball court in the Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood in Berlin. From an early age, Moritz Wagner was deemed “interesting” in the basketball scene. He was tall, agile and bold. And then there was also his younger brother, Franz. Today both play for Orlando Magic - in the same NBA team on the world’s biggest basketball stage.

The two brothers were both members of the German team that won the World Cup in 2023 and the European Championship in 2025. In the NBA, Franz signed one of the most lucrative contracts that a German player has ever been given. Moritz is a key rotation player and energiser. Millions follow their matches and off-court lives on social media. Alongside their fellow national squad players such as Dennis Schröder, they embody a new brand of German basketball: international, self-confident and competitive.

Pamela Reif – a fitness star made in Germany and feted in China

While some athletes fill stadiums, living rooms around the world are her stage: Pamela Reif has turned 20-minute workouts into a global training ritual. More than nine million people follow her on Instagram and YouTube, while her videos get millions of views on Chinese platforms such as Bilibili and Xiaohongshu. Her community there calls itself 帕梅拉女孩 (“Pamela’s girls”).

Her reach skyrocketed during the coronavirus lockdown. Fans uploaded Pamela Reif’s videos and shared their own training successes. As a result, the fitness influencer became an established figure on the digital fitness market. Cooperation with big brands followed and her nutrition products are sold internationally. Reif is a great example of how to combine sport, social media and entrepreneurship.

Jamal Musiala – an inconspicuous start

When he begins dribbling the ball, the spectators in the stadium hold their breath. A hook, a dummy, a short sprint - and suddenly the game opens up. Jamal Musiala plays creatively and is not averse to taking risks. For a long time, this was precisely what was not associated with German football, which was more about efficiency and structure.

Born in Stuttgart and trained in London, the 23-year-old German-Brit decided in the end to play in Germany. He has long been a fixture at FC Bayern Munich, while in the German national team he embodies a new beginning and generational shift. Rather than being a loudmouth or embroiled in scandal, he has become a role model for a new generation of athletes thanks to his lightness of foot, discipline and down-to-earth attitude.
