The Elversberg miracle
A village in the Saarland makes it into the 1st Bundesliga. How did that happen? Here are the key questions and answers.
What happened?
A football club from the small town of Spiesen-Elversberg (with a population of about 13,000) in the Saarland in the south-west of Germany was promoted to Germany’s national football league. This is unusual, because Germany’s top football clubs are usually from big cities or traditional football areas and have large budgets, stadiums and millions of fans. Spielervereinigung (SV) 07 Elversberg secured its place in the Bundesliga on 17 May 2026, the last day of the 2025/26 season. Everybody was so excited: fans stormed the pitch to celebrate with the team.
How does the German football league system work?
Germany has a league pyramid based on the principle of promotion and relegation. The top league is the Bundesliga (1st league), below this are the 2nd Bundesliga and the 3rd league. In addition to these, there are regional leagues and further amateur divisions. At the end of each season, the best teams in each league are promoted while those with the poorest performance are relegated. There is an additional relegation arrangement between the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga: one team from the 1st league will play a two-legged tie against a team from the 2nd league, competing for the final spot in the Bundesliga. The basic principle is that even small clubs can make it to the top if they do well.
How did Elversberg do that?
The team performed well in the 2nd league throughout the season, scoring 64 goals and finishing in second place, partly thanks to winning 3:0 against Preußen Münster on the final match day. What is particularly remarkable is that the team was able to keep up its performance, despite just about missing promotion in the year before and losing some important players in the summer. The midfielder Lukas Petkov took on a particularly important role after the winter break. The offensive player Tom Zimmerschied and the goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof, too, were able to stand out.
Who is the trainer?
Vincent Wagner (40) only became Elversberg’s trainer before the 2025/26 season, taking over from the team’s long-time coach Horst Steffen. Wagner successfully kept the team on track after losing a number of players and led the team to promotion to the Bundesliga in his first year.
Who sponsors the team?
The team’s key partner is Ursapharm, a pharmaceutical company from Saarbrücken: Elversberg’s stadium is called “Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde”. This connection is not limited to sponsoring, but is also reflected in the club’s staffing: the club’s President Dominik Holzer is also the Managing Director of Ursapharm, alongside his father Frank Holzer, who used to be a football player and trainer himself.
What will happen next?
A lot will change for Elversberg now: matches in the Bundesliga are faster paced, the opponents are stronger, and there is going to be greater pressure when it comes to the media and organisational matters. There are currently only 10,000 seats in the stadium, making it the smallest one in the Bundesliga. The club now needs to strengthen its lineup, reinforce its infrastructure, capacity and logistics and plan its activities in a way that ensures that the club makes use of this new platform without biting off more than it can chew. Its first big goal is to stay in the league.
