After Wiesn

Where to go after the Oktoberfest? Munich offers many opportunities to celebrate after the marquees have closed.

More than ten big marquees with the same closing time. But if you think that the celebrations are over at 11 pm, you are mistaken, because that is when things really get started in some parts of Munich.  “After Wiesn” is the popular term for the party after the party, when thousands of Oktoberfest visitors stream into the city’s clubs. But not everyone fancies the crowded discos. One option on offer is the Hacker-Pschorr Bräuhaus which is located close to the festival grounds. This is where the art of brewing is celebrated in an area of 4,000 square metres. The restaurant and beer garden have a rustic atmosphere with wooden benches, copper brewing kettles and hearty food. The same applies to the Löwenbräukeller on Stiglmaierplatz: Bavarian fun and dancing, traditionally accompanied by the Bergluft Band which includes the accordion and the alphorn among its instruments

Independent instead of brass bands

The Rockclub Substanz prefers independent music to the traditional Bavarian brass bands. This popular alternative for After Wiesn partying is just a few minutes’ walk from the Theresienwiese fairground. But queueing here is about as normal as saying cheers – or Prosit! – when you raise your tankard at the Oktoberfest.

If the inner-city becomes too overcrowded, you can always go to the idyllically located Villa Flosslände for partying in more natural surroundings. The neo- Renaissance villa in the picturesque Isar Valley is a few minutes away from the Theresienwiese either by bike or taxi. The atmosphere here is more relaxed with beer straight from the wooden barrels and a romantic camp fire until late in the night.

A private transport company offers a special service during the Oktoberfest. Its bus takes party-goers from the festival marquees into Munich’s nightlife, and it regularly shuttles back and forth in the evening between the Oktoberfest and popular After Wiesn clubs. The journey is the goal: the party can begin as soon as you enter the bus.
