Women's football is one of the fastest growing sports in Germany, with more and more women playing club football. We’ve got the answers to the big questions about women's football. 

Is the German women's team playing at the 2023 World Cup? 

Germany qualified for the tournament of top teams in Australia and New Zealand. The German women's team starts in Group H alongside Morocco, Colombia and South Korea.  

Who coaches the national team? 

The coach of Germany’s national team is Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. As a midfielder she played in 125 international matches. She was a losing finalist in the 1995 World Cup, and won the European Championships in 1989, 1991, 1995 and 1997.

Who has scored the most goals for Germany and who has won the most caps? 

Germany's record goalscorer is Birgit Prinz, who scored 128 goals in 214 international matches. She is also Germany's most capped player. In the current World Cup squad Alexandra Popp holds the goalscoring record, with 61 goals in 127 internationals. She has also won the most caps.  

Is there an official song for the 2023 Women's World Cup? 

The official World Cup Song was written by the New Zealand singer-songwriter Benee. It's called Do It Again. Benee is best known around the world for her song Supalonely with Gus Dapperton, which went viral on TikTok. 

How successful is the German women’s team? 

The German team is one of the best. The women have won two World Cups in 2003 and 2007, and eight European Championships. Germany won their first title against Sweden when Nia Künzer headed a golden goal winner in extra time to win 2:1. The balance sheet is completed by four Olympic medals: bronze in 2000, 2004 and 2008, and Gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. 

How many women play football for clubs in Germany? 

The DFB, Germany’s football association, has 845,664 adult female members and 326,121 female members aged under 16. There are 4,317 women’s teams and 4,836 girls teams which play in leagues, with 98,459 and 97,509 active players respectively. 

Which team won the 2022/23 league championship? 

There are 12 teams in the top women’s division of the DFB. As in the men’s league, Bayern Munich won the 2022/23 season, while VfL Wolfsburg won the cup competition. The record for the most titles is held by FFC Frankfurt (now Eintracht Frankfurt) and VfL Wolfsburg, with seven titles each since 1990.
