In the so-called Nation Brands Index, a study looking at the image of countries world-wide, for the second consecutive year Germany placed behind the US but ahead of the United Kingdom. However, in comparison to the previous year, these three countries in particular have scored fewer points.

“In general, the perception of a country on the global level remains very stable. But changes are possible and do happen,” comments Professor Simon Anholt, an independent political advisor, who called the Nation Brands Index into life in 2005: “The perceived influence a country has in the world primarily affects the nation’s image and not, for example, national particularities or successes. And this is exactly what we have observed this year. Countries deemed to have a strong global influence have lost prestige in a year marred by persistent international conflicts and humanitarian crises.”

The annual survey, carried out by market research institute GfK in collaboration with Simon Anholt, assesses the world-wide image of 50 countries in terms of six key criteria: exports, government, culture, population, tourism and immigration/investments. 20,353 persons over 18 in 20 countries were quizzed for the current study.
