Corona assistance for students
As of Tuesday, 16 June, students who are in financial distress because of the Coronavirus pandemic can apply for government support.
Berlin (dpa) – Students who are in financial distress because of the Coronavirus pandemic will soon be eligible to receive government support. “As of Tuesday, those affected will be able to apply for grants of up to 500 euros a month on the basis of an online process that will be uniform nationwide. These grants need not be repaid,” German Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek (CDU) told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” daily on Monday. The applications will then be processed by the local student affairs office that is responsible.
According to Karliczek, both German students and students from abroad will be eligible for the grants, irrespective of their age and how long they have studied for. “The deciding criterion is the level of personal, acute financial distress owing to the pandemic.” DSW, the German National Association for Student Affairs says that prior to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic about two thirds of students had part-time jobs that they used to finance their studies. Many of these jobs, for example in the hospitality industry, have been cut.
